Fun at Barton Creek

The lifeline of Austin is Lady Bird Lake.  Take a stroll, run or simply people watch, but it is an essential place to enjoy Austin.   Paddle board, canoe, or jump into the spring fed Barton Springs Pool.  Then in the evening, hop on a tour boat and watch the largest urban bat colony emerge from the Congress Bridge.

Beyond the lake, no matter where you are in Austin, you are just a stone’s throw away from a refreshing dose of peaceful nature.  There are greenbelts accessible to just about every neighborhood.  During the rainy season, Twin Falls at Barton Creek is a favorite watering hole.  The water is fresh and playful.  But equally fun is hiking during the dry season.  You can walk along the creek’s bedrock and a whole new landscape is revealed, like this hole in the rock.  This trail is less than 10 minutes from downtown, so you can escape the city for a full day excursion or for a quick walk.

Nightlife like a Local:

The self proclaimed title “Live Music Capital of the World” is true.  There is live music everywhere!  And it is wonderful!  It is actually pretty rare to go somewhere without live music.  I have even seen a mariachi band performing up and down the aisles of a local grocery store.

Walk down a street downtown and you will have your choice of any kind of music.  Sit back and relax in a romantical jazz lounge, or perhaps catch an acoustic set under the stars.  Wander into a rock-a-billy bar, or check them all off in one night.  The best music is always live music, so you can’t go wrong with your choice!

Eat like a Local

Wyndham Austin Owner's Page Article, Photo #7 - Taco SignThis picture sums up Austin.  It embodies the “Keep Austin Weird” mantra and exemplifies the best symbol to represent Austin, the taco. You can’t escape the taco, nor should you. It is truly an ambassador for Austin.  BBQ is a close second.  Or enjoy a BBQ taco and get the best of both worlds.  From 5 star dining to food trucks, you can and must eat your way through Austin.

But you will also need something to wash down all that food.  With at least 30 breweries and taprooms from creative ciders to hoppy IPAs you will find a drink to quench your thirst.  And for your easy reference, here is a current list of Texas Craft Breweries we created!

Do like a Local

Year round, there is a festival that will be to your liking.  ACL Music Festival (Austin City Limits), SXSW (South by Southwest), Moontower Comedy Festival and Formula 1 are some of the more prominent festivals, but there are so many more!  Enjoy a playful afternoon in Zilker park at the Kite Festival.  Meander around the grounds of the Capital at the Texas Book Festival.  Eat your way through the Ice Cream Festival and party at the Urban Music Festival.

Day Trip like a Local

Not only is there a multitude of things to do in Austin, you can day trip to a myriad of places to extend your vacation.  First head out to Fredericksburg, TX for a wine tasting tour, Trade Days, or their infamous Oktoberfest.  Or skip on over to Enchanted Rock for hiking and rock climbing.

Just south of town is Gruene, TX where you will need to eat at the Gristmill, go float the river in a tube (yes, this is thing and it is a wonderful thing), and end the night two stepping in Gruene Hall.  Visit Blanco, TX during the Lavender Festival and stop by the legendary Salt Lick BBQ on your way.  Finally, drive out to Lockhart, TX and decide for yourself if Smitty’s or Kreuz has the best BBQ.  I could go on and on about the fantastic options for the day trip.  There are so many great choices that will enhance your stay.
